Mont du Chat – 10.3%

Blue sky and flowers, sounds idyllic but is the steepest Hors Catégorie of 2017.

The climb of the Mont du Chat is rarely used in the Tour de France, so far only in 1974 and 2017. In 2017 it was classified as an hors catégorie climb.

One of four prints illustrating four HC category climbs from Le Tour de France 2017.
The diagonal illustrates the 10.3% gradient of the climb from it’s starting point above sea level to the summit. Blue sky and flowers – Mont du Chat, sounds idyllic but is the steepest climb of the 2017 Tour.
Hors Catégorie (HC) is a term used in stage bicycle races to designate a climb that is “beyond categorisation”. The term was originally used for those mountain roads where cars were not expected to be able to pass.
